POTENTIAL SHAKE UP TO THE TEMPORARY WORK (SUBCLASS 457) VISA SCHEME IN 2017

2016 has been an eventful year. A transitional year of what can only be deduced to people wanting to see change. In June 2016, 52% of the United Kingdom voted for a Brexit. In November 2016, America voted for Donald Trump to become their president. In the wake of this aftermath, there has been an influx in the Australian governments view of ‘Australia first’ jobs pitch which both Australian political parties are backing.

There are rumours that the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and Consolidated Skilled Occupation List (CSOL) are going to be condensed once more. This will subsequently limit the number of occupations that are permitted to be sponsored through the Temporary Work (Subclass 457) visa scheme. Like most significant migration legislation changes, we anticipate this to occur on 1 July 2017.

The Western world appears to be displaying a sense of national pride and have renewed vigour to place the citizens and permanent residents of their countries first. Bill Shorten has been quoted stating that the Australian government needs to prioritise “building Australian, buying Australian and employing Australian”.

Standard Business Sponsors, if you require employees from overseas, we wholly suggest submitting their applications prior to 1 July 2017.

Whilst we are unaware of the types of occupations that will be stripped from the SOL & CSOL, we can confirm there will be changes. It would be prudent to eliminate the risk and ensure your overseas employees visa status’ are secure.
